Configurable hardware

A field-programmable gate array contains configurable logic, connections and storage. Its configuration creates a digital circuit. Independent parts of that circuit can operate concurrently, and a pipeline can accept new input while earlier input is still being processed.

Why it matters for trading systems

A carefully designed hardware path can reduce and stabilise the time taken by a narrowly defined operation. That advantage depends on the design, workload and surrounding system. An FPGA is not automatically faster than software at every task.
